[21|06|04] Sunday at the Park: Manu Chao and Gilberto Gil open the first night of shows of the WCF

The World Cultural Forum will present its first artistic event on June 27 (Sunday) at 4 pm at Ibirapuera Park - The Peace Square (Praça da Paz) with heavy-weights of the world music .The night will begin with the French artist Manu Chao (and his band ) and special guests like the rapper Rappin- Hood, Be-Negão, (Planet Hemp) and Rossi (Pavilhão 9) and also the participation of Marcelo Yuka (ex- Rappa). Chao was in Brazil in the year 2000 and gathered 4 thousand people at the Free Jazz Festival. He was regarded as one of the greatest names in the international music scenario. Then, Chão will be joined by the Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil who will end the show with his band. Gil will be presenting his old hits and also songs from his latest álbum Kaya N'Gan Daya (2003).

Learn more about Manu Chao:

The son of a Spanish couple, Chao was born in Paris, on June 21, 1961. He was the leader of the most important band in France in the 80s and 90s which was also one of the most daring bands in the history of rock´n roll - the so called Manu Negra (named after a Spanish anarchist organization)

Together with his cousin, they became known after the release of the first single of the band "Mala Vida" and immediately after that got a contract with Virgin Records. But, due to the anarchist and carefree nature of the band ,which had no agents or producers, they never became internationally known.

Following an uncommon path in 1992, Mano Negra travelled through South América on a boat joined with actors, actresses and artists from the circus. In 1995, Mano Negra splat up. The lead singer then, went back to Latin América..The result of this period was the álbum called “Clandestino” (1998), which included a new version of "King of Bongo" by his previous band. Chao´s primitive sonoplasty, the jazz, the ska, the flamenco, the brazilian pop music blended with children´s voices and radiophonic sounds made “Clandestino”, (1998) an absolute success. The album sold 1 million copies only in France and another million copies around the world.. In 2001, the singer released “Proxima Estación: Esperanza”, which is a hit up to these days.

While in Brazil in the year 2000, the French singer showed that his fame of being a freedom fighter engaged in struggles was not only an excuse to show off. Chao gave a free concert to landless people at an encampment. The musician arrived in Brazil last Sunday (20) and is getting ready to take part in the most important cultural event held in São Paulo for the first time.
