Learn more about Manu Chao:
The son of a Spanish couple, Chao was born in Paris, on June 21, 1961. He was the leader of the most important band in France in the 80s and 90s which was also one of the most daring bands in the history of rock´n roll - the so called Manu Negra (named after a Spanish anarchist organization)
Together with his cousin, they became known after the release of the first single of the band "Mala Vida" and immediately after that got a contract with Virgin Records. But, due to the anarchist and carefree nature of the band ,which had no agents or producers, they never became internationally known.
Following an uncommon path in 1992, Mano Negra travelled through South América on a boat joined with actors, actresses and artists from the circus. In 1995, Mano Negra splat up. The lead singer then, went back to Latin América..The result of this period was the álbum called “Clandestino” (1998), which included a new version of "King of Bongo" by his previous band. Chao´s primitive sonoplasty, the jazz, the ska, the flamenco, the brazilian pop music blended with children´s voices and radiophonic sounds made “Clandestino”, (1998) an absolute success. The album sold 1 million copies only in France and another million copies around the world.. In 2001, the singer released “Proxima Estación: Esperanza”, which is a hit up to these days.
While in Brazil in the year 2000, the French singer showed that his fame of being a freedom fighter engaged in struggles was not only an excuse to show off. Chao gave a free concert to landless people at an encampment. The musician arrived in Brazil last Sunday (20) and is getting ready to take part in the most important cultural event held in São Paulo for the first time.
