Historicamente os cinemas africano e da diáspora africana têm sido um meio para africanos e africanos da diáspora definirem e reformularem sua cultura para si mesmos e para um público mundial. Ao mesmo tempo que o colonialismo e a economia global se inscreveram no continente, permitiram que a cultura africana influenciasse o mundo. Os africanos têm utilizado o poder criativo e transcendente do cinema para atravessar as imagens herdadas do colonialismo e cortar os estereótipos nutridos pelo pós-colonialismo. Como Ousmane Sembene, o pai do cinema africano diz, “O cinema africano é uma forma de auto-comunhão. Existem muitas coisas que ainda não aprendemos e estamos em perigo de perder; com o cinema podemos preservar e proteger para que as pessoas possam ver.”

A diáspora africana tem influenciado na formação de culturas híbridas, novas identidades, contextos multiculturais e um conceito original de pós-modernidade. O cinema é um meio ideal para exploração das interligações dinâmicas entre a cultura africana e ocidental. Através dos anos, os artistas africanos tem usado esta arte moderna para solidificar sua identidade, escrever sua história e definir suas nações. E pela primeira vez, o cinema ocidental nos mostra imagens destas novas populações, culturas e temas. A série de filmes propostos pelo Festival de Filmes Africanos e da Diáspora Africana unirá diversos filmes africanos e ocidentais que abordem conceitos de identidade e valores comunitários.

Mídia Simpósio

O seminário que acompanha o festival de cinema tratará de questões relevantes como a produção, marketing e distribuição mundial do cinema africano, como também a importância da produção negra na televisão e na mídia internacional. O encontro fortificará relações entre diretores, produtores, artistas e críticos, criando espaços para a formação de parcerias.

Workshop

Premiado diretor de fotografia, Robert Shepard, que filmou mais de 500 documentários e filmes para televisão e cinema apresentará workshops sobre o uso de técnicas de iluminação para controle do contraste em vídeo, película e uso do digital de tela ampla para fazer o vídeo parecer película. Os workshops acontecerão durante o festival dias 14 e 15 das 9 às 12h no Museu Eugênio Teixeira Leal para profissionais e estudantes de filme e vídeo.

African Cinema Festival

African and African Diaspora cinema have been historically a medium for Africans and Diaspora Africans to define and reformulate their culture for themselves and a world audience. Just as colonialism, migration and the global economy have inscribed themselves on the continent, they have allowed African culture to influence the world. Africans have employed the creative and transcending power of film to slice through the inherited images of colonialism and undercut the stereotypes nurtured by post-colonialism. As Ousmane Sembene, the father of African cinema says, “African cinema is a form of self-communion. There are many things we have not been taught and are in danger of losing; with cinema, we can safeguard them and people can see them.”

The African Diaspora has resulted in hybrid cultures, new identities, multicultural cities and an original sense of postmodernity. Film is an ideal medium for exploring the dynamic interplay between African and Western culture. Over the years, Africans have used this most modern art form to forge their identity, write their history and define their nations. And for the first time, Western film is showing us images of these new populations, cultures and issues. The films in the festival series will engage these themes of national and community identity.

Media Symposium

The symposium will address relevant themes developed by the film program such as production, marketing and world-wide distribution of African cinema, as well as the importance of black representation and production in television and international media. The ultimate objective of this symposium is to establish professional links and relationships and to create better opportunities for film and television distribution.

Workshop

Award-winning diretor de photography, Robert Shepard, who has filmed for more than 500 documentaries, films and television programs, will present a workshop on the control of contrast in film/video by the use of lighting techniques and how to use Digital wide screen video to get a film like look The workshops will be held during the festival on the 14 and 15th of December, from 9am till 12 noon at the Museum Eugênio Teixeira Leal. Workshops are open to professionals and students of film and video.
