Montar um evento como o Mercado Cultural Latino-americano é um desafio riquíssimo, repleto de encontros, processos e diálogos, fragmentos que compõe um todo- um verdadeiro tangran* . As partes vão se encontrando, ao mesmo tempo autônomas e interdependentes.
Trabalhamos sempre com uma filosofia de cooperação e crítica construtiva. E com grande paixão pelas artes, pela educação e pela transformação social.

Acreditamos no poder do encontro e do diálogo para com a transformação social. Ao proporcionar um espaço para tais encontros, acreditamos que o Mercado Cultural apresenta um potencial para com a geração de oportunidades, construção de novas pontes e parcerias. Talvez uma das coisas que mais nos fascina sobre este grande projeto é imaginar seus desdobramentos inúmeros, muitos dos quais nem chegaremos a saber.

Num esforço para tornar o I MERCADO CULTURAL LATINOAMERICANO um processo, além de um evento, a equipe de produção participou de diversas reuniões com a intenção de abrir a programação do evento e estudar novas oportunidades para sinergias. O resultado foi nossa decisão de apoiar alguns projetos sócio-culturais ao longo deste ano. Estas parcerias foram ricas para todos os envolvidos, e seus resultados estarão presentes no Mercado Cultural Latino-americano. Os projetos incluem a publicação da agenda O Negro na História do Brasil para o ano 2.000, um curso de fotografia para jovens e adolescentes da comunidade terreiro Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá, uma mostra de vídeos nas escolas públicas

acompanhado por discussões estimulantes, um intercâmbio cultural entre o percussionista Oseiku Daniel Diaz e o Ilê Aiyê e a composição de uma canção em homenagem ao Ubuntu Network, feito pelo grupo cultural Bagunçaço.

Sabemos que as soluções para os grandes desequilíbrios existentes na América Latina e no mundo passam pela cooperação e por um compromisso com o coletivo do qual o mundo carece. E é neste espírito que oferecemos este projeto e suas futuras edições.

Creating an event like the Latin American Cultural Market is an extremely rich challenge, filled with informal meetings, processes and dialogues, fragments which form a whole—a veritable Chinese tangran*. The pieces come together, at once autonomous and interdependent.

We worked at all times with a philosophy of constructive cooperation and criticism, and with great passion for the arts, education and social transformation.

We believe in the power of informal gatherings and communication in creating social transformation. In providing a space for these encounters, our hope is that the Cultural Market has the potential to generate new opportunities, thereby building new bridges and making new connections. Perhaps one of the things that most fascinates us about this project is imagining its numerous and unforeseeable consequences and outcomes.

In an effort to make the Latin American Cultural Market a three-dimensional process, something beyond an event, the production staff engaged in many meetings to open the programming and study new opportunities for synergies and collaboration. The result was our decision to support socio-cultural projects throughout the year. These partnerships have enriched all those involved, and their results are manifest in the Latin American Cultural Market. The projects include a publication of a diary O Negro na História do Brasil - Blacks in Brazilian History in commemoration of the year 2000, a photography course for the students of the Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá community, a video in the schools project accompanied by discussions, a cultural exchange between the percussionist Oseiku Daniel Diaz and Ilê Aiyê, and the composition of a song in honor of the Ubuntu Network by the group Bagunçaço.

We know that the solutions for the immense inequalities in Latin America and the world can only come about through innovative cooperation and collective commitment, both of which the world desperately needs. It is with this spirit that we present this project and those to come.
