"O Cinema africano é uma forma de autocomunhão. Existem muitas coisas que ainda não aprendemos e estamos correndo o risco de perder. Através do cinema podemos preservar e proteger para que as pessoas possam ver". - Ousmane Semene, pai do cinema africano.

Autocomunhão. Comunhão de idéias. Registro de culturas. O Cinema se presta a todos estes papéis, e ainda cumpre a função de anunciar a transgressão e de refletir a realidade que não se pode revelar. Porém, necessário se faz assumir que este tem como motor a cultura do entretenimento, pois sem a estrutura do interesse do espectador, o Cinema, mais do que qualquer outra linguagem, não se sustentaria.

A diáspora africana tem influenciado na formação de culturas híbridas, novas identidades, e contextos multiculturais e um conceito original de pós-modernidade. O cinema é um meio ideal para exploração da ligação entre a cultura africana e a ocidental. Através dos anos, os artistas africanos têm usado esta arte moderna para solidificar sua identidade, escrever sua história e definir suas nações. E pela primeira vez, o cinema ocidental nos mostra imagens destas populações, suas culturas e temas.

Salvador é uma cidade de forte influência africana, contendo a terceira maior população negra fora da África. Tem uma localização privilegiada e, em todo o seu espaço urbano e na sua cultura, está inscrita um pouco da história do povo negro. O Festival conta com a magia deste entorno para propor uma discussão da herança africana, no momento em que este assunto volta à baila, permeado de uma nova consciência de identidade cultural e de sua responsabilidade nas relações sociais e com o ambiente.

O Festival faz uma homenagem especial a Moçambique e seu movimento de resistência cinematográfica. Um país com graves problemas econômicos, onde a linguagem audiovisual conta com um movimento de resistência. A experiência "Um filme africano por dia", num cinema em Maputo, vai ser mostrada ao público e discutida com as comunidades locais. O evento traz, como convidado especial, o cineasta Licínio Azevedo, brasileiro residente em Moçambique, e a representante do New York African Film Festival, Mahen Bonetti.

O Festival pretende trabalhar com todos os formatos, película e vídeo, documentário e ficção, longas e curtas metragens, entretenimento e denúncias. Retratar o perfil de um povo multicor, com ousadas experiências contemporâneas e mostras históricas. O conceito do pan-africanismo pretende congregar Moçambique, Bahia e o resto do mundo.

LANÇAMENTO 2000

O lançamento oficial do Festival Pan Africano 2000 ocorreu em 25/09, com a presença do diretor cubano Rigoberto Lopez, a apresentação do filme "Puerto Principe Mio" (história da cidade de Porto Príncipe, Haiti) e a mostra fotográfica do cubano René Peña.

"African Cinema is a form of auto communion. There are many things which we have not yet learned and are facing the risk of losing. Through cinema we are able to preserve and protect so that people can see and partake". - Ousmane Semene, father of African cinema.

Auto-communion. Communion of ideas. Preservation of cultures. Cinema fulfills all these roles, as well as announcing transgressions and stirring up reflection about a reality which may not be revealed. Its motor is the culture of entertainment, for without the structured interest of a spectator, cinema, more than any other language, would not support itself.

The African Diaspora has strongly influenced the formation of hybrid cultures, new identities, multicultural contexts and an original concept of post modernity. Cinema is the ideal medium for the exploration of the relationships between African and western culture. Through the years, African artists have used this modern art medium to solidify their identities, write their histories and define their nations. And for the first time, western cinema begins to make available images of these populations, cultures and themes.

Salvador is a city of strong African influence, as it is home to the third largest Afro-descendent population outside of Africa. It has a privileged localization and within all of its urban space and culture one finds the history of black peoples. The Festival inserts itself within this magical surrounding to propose a discussion concerning African heritage, at a moment when these discussions are resurfacing, permeated by a new awareness of cultural identity and its relationships with society and the environment.

The Festival makes a special tribute to Mozambique and its cinematic resistance movement. A country with serious economic problems, the audiovisual medium is imbued with a movement for resistance. The project "An African Film Per Day", at a local cinema in Maputo, will be presented to the public and discussed with the local communities. The event will have as its guest of honor, the film director Licínio Azevedo, a Brazilian residing in Mozambique, and the New York African Film Festival representative, Mahen Bonetti.

The Festival is planning to integrate all formats and styles including film and video, documentaries and fiction, short and full length features to help trace the profile of a multicolored people with innovative contemporary experimentations as well as historical expositions. The concept of Pan-Africanism will congregate Mozambique, Bahia and the whole world.

2000 FESTIVAL OPENING

The official inauguration of the Pan African Festival 2000 occurred on September 25 with the presence of the Cuban director Rigoberto Lopez and the screening of the film "Puerto Principe Mio" (a history of the city of Porto Principe, Haiti) and a photography exhibit by the Cuban photographer René Peña.
