Significando “nação negra” em yorubá, o Ilê foi o primeiro bloco afro fundado na Bahia. Nasceu em 1974, em pleno Curuzu-Liberdade e tem objetivo de preservar, expandir e valorizar a cultura afro brasileira. Sempre realizando atividades públicas culturais, traz à tona temas que homenageiam países africanos ou revoltas negras brasileiras. Sua banda, a Band’Aiyê, já fez apresentações em palcos nacionais e internacionais, impressionando pela beleza e qualidade musical.

The name of this group means “black nation” in Yoruba. Ilê was the fisrst Afro bloco percussion group founded in Bahia. It was born in Curuzu – Liberdade, on November 1, 1974, with the intention of preserving, valorizing and expanding Afro-Brazilian culture. The Band’Aiyê, which in 99 released their fourth CD Canto Negro (Black Song), has performed on national and international stages in Marinique, Angola, Benin, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Oakland, Germany, Denmark, Charleston, Miami, Washington, New York, and Portugal, among others. In its 27 years of carnaval, the group’s themes have always honoured countries as well as Brazilian black struggles.
